Nokia E63 Review

Nokia E63 has an ARM 11 processor of 369 MHz. This means that the menu navigation is moving well and fast. As expected from a Nokia smartphone, it runs Symbian OS 9.2, Series 60, version 3.1. In standby mode, the E63's screen displays the connectivity, the mobile phone operator, the time and the date and a band of shortcuts: messaging, Internet, music player, photo gallery, alarm clock and the Switch mode that will change the icons of the shortcuts. Unfortunately, their customization is impossible; the SWITCH mode comes with its own shortcuts.

At the bottom of the screen we find two menus, camera and MENU, which I mentioned earlier. The menu of Nokia E63 is positioned in a matrix format with icons on four columns and three rows and each of them is very thorough. For example, the Media menu has in its composition the recorder, the music player, the music store, the camera, the picture gallery, RealPlayer, podcasts, the radio, internet radio, the music store, Flash Player, 3D tone ringtones, and the online share service.

Nokia E63 supports SMS, MMS, email and instant messaging. SMS and MMS messages are stored in a separate inbox from the e-mail, which in turn has a separate inbox. Setting the e-mail is easy and the standard protocols supported are POP3 and IMAP4. Each mail supports electronic attachments. To set your e-mail you need an internet connection.

Samsung Louvre and Pivot Smartphones

Samsung Louvre features a sliding mechanism that reminds me of HTC Tytn II (screen tilts when it slides out) and it uses Windows Mobile 6.1. Its specs list also includes a 3.2 megapixel camera and a widget screen that’s very similar to the one on Omnia.

Pivot is a bit more interesting, as it comes with a QWERTY keyboard, Windows Mobile 6.5, a 5 megapixel camera with flash and aGPS. Many consider it the successor to Samsung i780… Sadly, there’s no release date and no pics were made available for the devices, but what we do know is that they’ll hit the market in early 2009.

Nokia Still Worldwide Leader, Loses Nearly 50% Market Share

Nokia managed to hold onto their “worldwide leader” status for the Smartphone market during Q2 2011 sales, however the company did watch their worldwide reach fall from 41% to 22% of the market.
According to Gartner the company moved 23.9 million smartphones in Q2 2010, mostly from sales of Symbian based devices.
Gartner also revealed that many of those sales likely came from bargain basement prices that Nokia offered to clear out remaining inventories.

Gartner analyst Roberta Cozza said of the company’s actions:

“I think Nokia’s channel situation is pretty lean and in the third quarter we will not see the same effect from destocking as we saw in the second quarter,” while adding, “It’s clear that Nokia’s smartphone business will remain under challenge.”

Nokia sold 97.9 million mobile devices when non-Smartphone devices were included in the company’s count, while 2010 witnessed 111.47 million units moved during the same period.

As the company watches their sales drop, the overall market has been very healthy with 428.7 million mobile devices sold in the second quarter of this year, that’s an increase of 16.5% year-over-year based on quarterly periods, while Smartphone sales increased by 74% globally.

In comparison Apple constituted 18.2% market share, while Google Android based devices now make up 43.4% worldwide, up from 17.2% the year prior.

Nokia has big plans for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 platform which has had some moderate success which Microsoft hopes will grow when Windows 8 is released with further Smartphone integration capabilities for WP7 powered devices.

In the meantime, partnering with Google Android might not be a bad move for Nokia, I’ve personally always liked the design models they’ve offered and top notch cameras, but Symbian offers a UI from another generation and it simply can’t compete with iOS, Android or even WebOS for that matter.

AT&T Set to Release New Samsung Jack Smartphone

This past week, AT&T announced another Samsung smartphone that will be added to their line-up. The new phone is called the Samsung Jack, not to be confused with the Samsung Jack being offered on the Canadian GSM carrier – Rogers, which is actually a BlackJack II. This new Jack runs Windows Mobile 6.1 but will be upgradable to Windows Mobile 6.5 when the time comes. The new Jack adds WiFi, a 3megapixel camera and a new keyboard design. The new keyboard is more like the one found on the Motorola Q than on previous BlackJack models. There are no more spaces between the keys on this new layout. I actually prefered the keyboard on the old BlackJack and didn’t care for the keyboard on the Q because of that space. I found it much easier to find the keys without looking at the keyboard. So it might take a little getting use to for some of us. It’s getting very hard to decide what my next device should be. I’m still lusting after the Propel Pro which was released a couple weeks back.
